The Sound Waves project explores urban and social identity through sound, storytelling, and new technologies in Silesia (Poland) and Athens (Greece). The project investigates how sonic atmospheres shape citizens’ sense of place, belonging, and well-being in urban environments, drawing on the concept of “sonic urban atmospheres” as a sphere of information about the city and its communities.
By combining sound art, social research, and digital tools such as AI and XR, the project fosters youth civic participation, social innovation, and meaningful dialogue between young people and local institutions. Participants engage in sound walks, community radio workshops, and interactive gamified experiences that empower them to discover, document, and share the sonic identity of their neighbourhoods.
Key outputs include a Sound Art Education programme developed in Silesia, the “Sound Hunts” platform, an interactive urban sound narrative experience developed by Narratologies in Athens, the “Dialogue Festival” bringing together youth, artists, NGOs, and decision-makers in Poland, and a research report on urban sound identity and its role in youth civic engagement.
Sound Waves partner organisations include:
- Fundacja Kulminacja (Poland) – Project Lead
- Narratologies P.C. (Greece)
