The CREATHRIV-EU project aimed to integrate augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies into the Narratologies digital environment, while also creating a back-office platform and authoring tool to manage and manipulate the corresponding content in real-time. This technical infrastructure enables content creators to design, update, and deploy immersive experiences without the need for specialised programming skills.
The integration facilitates interactive and immersive experiences for users, enabling them to explore the rich tapestry of cultural and historical sites with a simple tap on their screens. In partnership with kythniale, a cultural initiative based on Kythnos island in the Cyclades Islands complex in Greece, the project created a prototype treasure hunt that demonstrates the potential of XR technologies in enhancing the appeal and educational value of cultural sites.
The treasure hunt experience on Kythnos served as a proof of concept, combining location-based storytelling with AR content to guide participants through the island’s cultural landmarks. The project demonstrated how emerging technologies can make cultural heritage more accessible and engaging, particularly for smaller destinations seeking innovative ways to attract and educate visitors.
